"Pyrex"
« on: February 23, 2007, 10:24:11 PM »
I was saddened by today's news that all "Pyrex" production is to end in Sunderland.  The work will be transferred to France.

That must represent the end of large-scale production of glass in the North East of England, apart from The Thermal Syndicate at Wallsend.  They make technical products in fused silica which is, of course, a glass even if not recognised as such by the general public.

Frank - All I know is what I read in the press and Ceefax.  "Sunderland Echo" web site had a piece.  I gather the French firm Arco took over about 18 months ago so presumably the writing was on the wall from then.  I'm afraid I have no contacts at the firm now (they are all bound to be retired or dead!!).  I left 35 years ago.

There was a false alarm a few months ago when the press ran a very confusing feature.  In the end it was, I think, the closure of the odd outlying section, possibly still owned by Corning.  Unless the press are at it again (and I fear not) it is the main site at Millfield which is closing.  A very small part of that is where the original "Flint Factory" was located.
