Help request -who is this maker?
« on: April 30, 2018, 06:32:52 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I’d be very grateful if anyone could tell me anything! About this pretty little vase. It’s a very strange thing looking orange in some lights and milky green in others. It went white when wet but dried back ok. The monogram seemed to have been scratched through molten glass rather than impressed or etched. A real mystery. I think maybe its uranium?  Any help at all, particularly with the maker would be really appreciated.

Hi Elsie.  I've a similar monogram I am trying to identify through the board. Mine is not identical, but I am looking around the Leerdam Holland glass marks where there are similarities. We should keep an eye out on both our postings to see if there are any clues! In the meantime, have a look at some Leerdam marks such as A D Copier and Karel de Bazel.  Again, not identical, but hopefully in the right style.  Best of luck! Kind regards, Barry

Hi Barry,  thanks for commenting and your help. I was starting to lose hope lol. The Monogram has been struck with such a confidence and practiced hand that I’m sure it was no amateur. I’ll have a look at Dutch glass and let you know if I find something. What do you think regarding age? I’m leaning towards art nouveau.

Regards
Tracy

Hi Tracy. Yes, it certainly is an unusual piece. Let's hope we both get a response from the rest of the Board. Yours certainly has a few extra strokes in the monogram!  Uncertain of the age, let's wait and see what input we get.

Barry

:) The mark looks familiar, but from an area I'm not familiar with.
I don't think it is as old as art nouveau.
I've tracked down the first page of a glass marks lexicon provided by the great-glass website, all in alphabetical order. You might like to have a search?

http://www.great-glass.co.uk/glass%20notes/marka-c.htm

Reidel used marks similar to this, which they changed every year.
You're both already aware that Leerdam used marks in this style too.
Sometimes Dartington marks can be a bit like this.

But the glass itself looks absolutely nothing like Leerdam, Reidel or Dartington.
I'm quite confused and confuddled by it.  ;D

Welcome to the board, Elsie. Not everybody logs in every day, don't give up in despair after just a couple of days. Some ids can take time, (some years!) but we don't give up.
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Hi,

I’m glad it’s not just me that’s confuddled - great word! I won’t give up, oh no. I’ll just bide my time and wait for a lovely expert to shine a light onto my query and illuminate it.

Thanks for the communication x
