Please ID this Opalescent Lion Paperweight
« on: March 13, 2007, 04:09:04 PM »
I bought this opalescent Lion today, it is unmarked , it measures 6" in length and 3.75" tall and weighs 858 gms, I am sure it does have some age with some wear to base and it has a little damage chipped ear and minor chips to base

Despite the clipped ear - bravo! Very good find. I think it is Derbyshire - but I'm sure you will be told in detail what when and how.

Hi Ivo

I,ve collected and sold lots of Derbyshire and would say a no to Derbyshire, I have several Derbyshire lions and although  very similar the base is wrong even for the derbyshire cross paws lion, this is on a retangle base where Derbshires are oval my gut feeling says French , hope I find out later

thanks roy

I may be way off the mark but what about Burtles and Tate?

No its not Burtles and Tate, and I would go as far as to say not British, European or American ?, as to age not sure but do not think Victorian although I could be wrong 1930 /50's just a guess on my part may turn out to be older or newer than that

Pamela, it may be my eyes but it looks as though your lion has some kind of writing on the side of the base?

Have you thought of Labino glass?
I dont know muh about them, but always see birds in the same opalescent color when I do searches on Murano.
At least is a new lead?

The image above is of a similar, but frosted, Lion which is of the same general size as Roy's and has a rectangular foot. Maker is unknown but I strongly suspect French as this one has a raised inmressed mark "ROBIN" to two sides of the base.

I took the photo a few years ago for a friend who owns the piece and I tried to research the "ROBIN" mark. The closest I came was that this was a French term used by chemists and was likely to have been around the 1950s.

The Lion may have been a top to a rectangular chemist jar.

Robin were a drugs company.
