Red dish - who?
« on: March 17, 2007, 07:26:41 PM »
Posting on behalf of member trying:
A pair deep ruby red with a pontil mark on bottom and then smooth on edges. In the clear glass are slithers of gold and on each side of the dish is a lions head also with the gold flecks.
Pic here: http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-5704

Any help appreciated.

Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

Looks like Venetian glass, unsure of age, since i've seen they are being re-done.
can you post more pics?

Aha!  This lady put these bowls on 'Is It' on whitefriars.com.  I asked her to try here (under my pseudonym 'Gina'), so I'm glad she made it.   :D

I have something similar, with raspberry prunts around the rim. Thankfully, the photos are still on Photobucket:

Not sure if this adds anything to the debate! The gold flecks appear to be applied to the surface, as well as an inclusion. I suspect it's Murano, c.1960, and might benefit from being moved to this forum.

Edit: but I've just noticed Javier has repled!

I actually posted an extract from a 1951 advert from Pottery Gazette and Glass Trade review:

The clear frilled, applied rim does seem consistent with mine, although less so with Carole's, which features a plainer rim.

Some more photos taken in daylight might help.

Another reference piece for comparison.  I also have the very large serving bowl to this sundae.  The gold flecks are in the clear glass.  The ruby glass is slightly wrythern.

I thought Italian c.1950, but that's just my feeling and not supported by any actual knowledge!

There are several differences between mine, such as the foot and rim. It is possible there were two makers, but I'd agree they still date to the 1950s.
