Balmoral Carnival Glass Tumbleup or Wine Decanter?
« on: April 11, 2007, 02:20:17 PM »

Hi all (Glen  :-* )

I have a decanter and I am not sure if it is a tumbleup decanter, without a tumbler, or a wine decanter, without a stopper. Is there a difference? If so, what do you think mine is? I have studied the available photos very carefully, but I cannot decide as I cannot find a picture of a tumbleup decanter without a tumbler on top.
It measures 8 1/4" in height.

Thanks in advance  ;) :D

Hi Della (I've been out of touch for a while as we had a very sad family "loss", so if I "disappear again shortly, please understand why).

I think the item you have could actually be a cologne bottle minus the stopper. It seems to be shorter (not as many vertical blocks) and not as wide as both the tumble up and the decanter. You'll have seen the tumble up on Dave's site, and you can see an original ad for the decanter on my site here;

I have a friend who collects this pattern - I'll ask him for verification and get back to you.

Hi Glen,
First of all, I am so sorry to hear that you have suffered a loss. All my love goes out to you, with a massive big hug included.

As for the bottle, I actually have 3 varying sizes of the scent bottles, and this is huge in comparrison. The largest perfume bottle is the same size with its stopper. It is a shame that a photo cannot show size. It is actually larger than the Jacobean tumbleup that I have on ebay at the mo.
Also, if your friend would like a small perfume bottle stopper, for postage only. Let me know. I have one, because I accidentally smashed the bottle.
If I know, I'll comment. If I think I know, I'll have a go. If I have no idea, I'll just keep quiet and learn from others, so the next time I'll know.

The piece in the photo is 8 1/4" in height.

The stopper is only suitable for the 4 3/4" bottle (if he needs it).

Thanks, Glen   :-*

Hi Glen,

I have just taken a quick snapshot of the ? next to my Jacobean tumble up decanter, just to give you an idea of the size of it.

P.S. As a side note, there is no signs of a stopper ever being inside the neck, not like in the perfume bottles.

If I know, I'll comment. If I think I know, I'll have a go. If I have no idea, I'll just keep quiet and learn from others, so the next time I'll know.

It certainly is a "whopper"! What a fascinating item, Della - thanks for this comparative photo, which is very useful. I'll send all your information to my friend and see if he's come across anything like it. Meanwhile, congratulations on another intriguing discovery.

I've heard back from my friend and neither of us can give you a definite answer. This shape is not the same height as the tumble up and isn't the same as the decanter either. So, here is my best guess (until we find out further...... always hopeful):

I suggest it could be an open water carafe (as opposed to a covered "night set" piece i.e. a tumble -up). Imperial in the USA made a splendid open water bottle in their "Imperial Grape" design that has no stopper or lid of any kind. It seems likely that this item you have could serve such a function.

I've emailed you privately about this as well, Della, for other reasons.
