Topic: anyone familiar with Davidson's Norman pattern?

I've been puzzling over this jug which was exhibited at the Britain Can Make It exhibition in 1946. (Apologies for the atrociously long link - if possible, could a moderator shorten it?)

All the other pressed glass in the AHDS pictures from the exhibition is Sherdley (and I think all by Alexander Hardie Williamson), but I don't recognise this as a Sherdley design.

This evening, I came across this e-bay listing, which looks identical:

The seller thinks it's Davidson's Norman. I've done a bit of web research and discovered that Norman was designed by W. J. G. Fullerton. Fullerton was employed by Davidson's from 1939 to 1947, so the timing would be right for the Britain Can Make It exhibition. But I can't find a picture on-line or in any of my reference books.

Is there anyone here who can confirm or deny?

Heidi, there's a picture of the Norman pattern in Chris and Val Stewart's book, Davidson Glass, a history, (page 57 if you have a copy.)  The book says the Norman pattern (pattern no. 360) was introduced in 1945 and was a "variation on the Ripple pattern."  The photo shows plates not a jug, but it's hard to make the connection between the jug on eBay and the Norman pattern as shown in the book. Perhaps Chris Stewart may be able to confirm or refute the ID for you.

A jug is shown on p21 of 20th Century Glass, McConnell. I tentatively identified these as Norman bowl and jug BTW the jug is for sale cheap. There is something similar from Holmegaard and someone else but no time to look now. Mine is Davidson 40s/50s quality

Hi,

I'm not sure if the bowl or jug are the Norman pattern. Firstly I don't think a jug was made in the norman pattern and secondly the shape of the bowl looks wrong for Davidson.

The Norman pattern, or to give it it's correct name the 360 pattern, was made as late as the early 1970s. Despite that it is quite rare.

There are a number of patterns similar to the Norman pattern around including Sowerby and Sherdly. The Sherdly pattern pre-dates the Norman pattern.

Maybe the AHDS/ e-bay jug is Sherdley after all then.

Christine's is different, with more rings - I think the same number as the Holmegaard one in McConnell, but maybe not Holmegaard quality?

Spent part of last week at Himley Hall rummaging through the Alexander Hardie Williamson collection, and finally found the answer to this query (and several more too). The jug is called Hoopla, designed by AHW for Sherdley and first produced in 1946. There was a matching tumbler too - see pic attached.
