Manufacturers mark
« on: April 23, 2007, 06:22:17 AM »
Hi
I have a set of 6 crystal spirit tumblers with a crown mark on the bottom. It is a 5 point crown with round dots on each point. The crown base is two long dashes followed by a row of 5 short dashes then another row of two long, there is a vertical dash on each side of these three rows. Can anyone tell me the manufacturer please? I have searched the likely candidates being Stuart, Webb Corbett & Waterford but can not find a Crown mark like this in their marks. These were a wedding present and I had thought the aunt said they were Webb Corbett.

Hi Suel,
Crown Crystal Glass Co., Australia, perhaps. They have a makers mark of a crown with 3 dots.
If I know, I'll comment. If I think I know, I'll have a go. If I have no idea, I'll just keep quiet and learn from others, so the next time I'll know.

Not sure, Christine. 'Till recently, that mark was usually found on their pyrex ware. They did have a crystal line, but it's acid etched 'Grimwade', labelled, or completely unmarked. Could it be more recent though - I'm not sure what they've been making since 1997. The logo they use on this website is a more stylised version of the old mark.

Certainly there's nothing like that in their current catalogue.

Sue, is there any chance of a photograph?

Hi Cathy,
You are as bad as my Mum, she always calls me Christine too (she has her mind on my sister at the time).  ;) ;D ;D

Ok I have taken a picture...not easy as the bottom of the tumbler is ridged...
have uploaded...just in case I didn't get the link bit right it is the 3rd page bottom row of the marks gallery. Have just looked at the Royal Doulton website...the pattern is similar to one they have on a brandy decanter & glasses. I don't see any reference to a crown mark. My set could have been produced around the time Royal Doulton bought up Webb Corbett give or take a year or two or three :)

Not in Hartmann. In any case it is sand-blast stencilled which would tend to point to later 20th Century.

And the crown is not very British. Although it could be a coronet 'Ducal' etc.

Did manufacturers have different marks for export?
