blue AND uranium glass!!
« on: June 19, 2007, 02:29:27 AM »
I just got this in the mail today and can't wait to show it off!  It is cut glass, very heavy, and is two layers of glass.  the outside layer is blue, the inside gather is vaseline/uranium glass.  The piece has a high lead content and is cut glass.  There is a nice polished pontil on the bottom, and good honest wear on the foot.  Anyone recogize the cutting, style or maker?  It was sold to me as Czech, about 1920, unknown maker.  I got it from great-glass.co.uk
It is 17cm across the top, and just over 12cm tall.  The photos clearly show the internal gather of uranium glass, but due to the blue outer layer, it is tough to see any yellow, as the blue spectrum washes out the yellow.  you can only see the yellow at the very narrow portion, just above the foot in normal room light.

In my research I just came across a blue Uranium piece that was marked Check and possibly SKLO but I open up a Millers 20th Century book and find what loks like the exact vase...and I think you might have a Bagley here..in both cases, yours and mine. Let me know if you ever found out before this post.

Bagley did not make cut glass - they were basically a bottle making factory so pressed only. Sklo is simply the Czech word for glass, so yes it's sklo - that's what this board is all about  :24: But it is not Sklo Union as this was a conglomerate of Czech pressed glass factories.

Which Miller's and which page?

Czechoslovakia seems a likely option though

Dave — Apologies — this one escaped me in 2007.

I'm puzzled as to how British manufacturers have been eliminated, when it looks to me like the high quality restrained cutting on a high quality blank that you would expect from the likes of S&W, Stuart, Webb, Webb Corbett, Walsh, &c.

Am I missing something obvious?   Besides marbles IYSWIM  :spls:

The only British manufacturer eliminated is Bagley!

Hi all

These are brief things you might want to take a look at. Not the definitive. I have the sklo book on order and hope to have it by the VGC convention.

The Sklo Union factories still did not make cut glass and this item is cut, so those references are irrelevant. I know, I edited much of the Sklo Union book! Sorry
