Chris, while you're online, I have what seems to be a Davidson 34SVF in a bright red, but not the ORA red. Would that have been the wrong colour that 109 were made in? Should it have a ground ring base?

Sounds like a 1950s ruby version. Do you have a picture ?

Hi again Chris - this is a repeat of a post that vanished yesterday...

I don't think it's ruby, because the trails are fairly opaque in a clear red ground. It's exactly 6" tall, and has trails. Here are the pictures:

Maybe it's not even Davidson? Or is it an orange colour gone wrong?

Cathy, I think your vase is orange cloud. Red cloud is painted. See here for info on orange

Thanks Christine - I knew it wasn't the ORA colour. The confusion is that it's an almost fire engine red. On Chris' site, he notes that 159 of these vases were made in orange, and that 109 were marked 'wrong colour'. Could at least one of the wrong colours have come out such a primary red? I think yes, but because it would mean that it's a very special piece indeed I was wanting confirmation

Bernard did provide confirmation, but his reply vanished. It's not helping that at least five messages from this thread have disappeared...

Cathy â€” I can't recall exactly what I said in my missing reply, but here goes again:-

To me, your lovely orange cloud 34SVF is both stunning and important. It is a classic example of Davidson's brilliant flexibility with post-moulding reshaping. It is a wonderful colour variation of orange cloud which I have never previously seen in any shape. And it is a mystery to us today why this vase was not produced and sold by the tens or hundreds of thousands, and, thus, is a classic example of how significantly public tastes have changed over the intervening seventy years.

Should you ever consider selling it, I think it is of sufficient importance to warrant advance notice being provided to the four or so museums that hold major collections of cloud glass.

Grateful thanks for sharing it with us. I think it would be useful to split this thread and give your vase the topic it deserves in its own right â€” if one of our overworked moderators could spare the time.
