Glass vases with clear base and bulbous green streaked top
« on: August 06, 2007, 10:12:39 PM »
Hi, I was recommended to ask for help here to identify a pair of glass vases I know nothing about. I've never seen anything quite like the and am not sure I'd want to again.

They're about seven inches high, the green part is very fine glass although the base clear glass is more substantial, there's a bit more information at

Many thanks
Chris

Lynne reckoned "probably Bohemian or Czech, possibly English, but VERY Victorian" and that's about all I know (except that they're a very acquired taste!)

7" tall
3" across the base
2.5" across the widest part of the green glass

I'm with Lynne. They are just grotesque enough to be Victorian  >:D

I think Lynne is spot on. England is the less likely contender.

Many thanks you guys. These really are horribly but I'm kinda fond of them. I still don't know what was in the head of the guy that made em, they have to have been on drugs or something  :o

That's 19th century design for you. I also think it was a period of experimenting with shapes and colours in glass and when form began to come before function for the middle classes. It was all hand-made so could be as wacky as the maker liked in a way that perhaps ceramics couldn't at the time. Look at some of the Scandinavian 20th century glass, in reality it's equally as wacky

I do like the unusual rather than the mundane, if it's not wacky (and a bit ugly) I'm not interested  :D
