Topic: Kosta Help...Glass Tankard Signed 1974

Hi all,

Well I finally bought something that is signed!! Something that can be identified too I dont seem to have much luck with the glass I find..LOL  Im just hoping I dont get shot down in flames by having bought something that isnt what I thought it was....

Measures just over 14cm high..rim is 9cm wide, weighs 1.3 kilos. Raised 1974 with a squirrel? or fox? Im sorry if this is a common thing but dont know much. Has Kosta 97?10 and then a signature which I cant understand. Im not great with reading these. Clear bubble right in the centre of the base. No damage except for at the top applied part of the handle, looks like a stress fracture? crack, only on the applied bit.

Is this the well known Kosta ? Boda? Is this a commemorative mug? Id love any information. It was a last minute grab and I hope a not too hasty one. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this.

oooh that signature looks a LOT to me like V Lindstrand - which would obviously be Vicke Lindstrand who worked for Kosta.  I've not (unfortunately for me) owned any of his work so don't have a signature to compare but I'll have a root around online and see if I can find one.  I'm sure others on here have signed Vicke Lindstrand pieces - a search on here might find something as well.  I did read that he sometimes signed with initials but also signed with his full name and the Kosta with a number so I think your piece looks OK.

He retired from Kosta in 1973 though so the tankard itself can't be any later than 1973 and the engraving must have been added at a later date (if this is one of his designs that is).

Definately Lindstrand...Kosta produced quite a few ranges with suspended bubble bases including 'Samba' by Lindstrand, and 'Pippi' apparently desinged by R Hickman (possibly Royal Hickman) from the 30's on.

The '97410' is the standard five digit pattern number, according to Ivo's book in use since the 70s with the last two digits being the year of design, though that seems unlikely here?

The etched design and date do look like a comemorative of some corporate sort that may or may not have been added later? The designers name or initials would still appear on thier designs after they had left the company.

A search through replacements.com suggests it might be from or based on the 'Mambo' range, I've had tumblers from this range which are usually thinner blown than this appears but never seen the tankard, hopefully someone else has.

The squirrel/fox and date I thought were raised, but having a closer look, they are cut into it. I can only tell that by feel.

So even though its a company or commemorative..is it still a desirable piece? Or not so much..obviously its not as lovely as some of the vases Ive been looking at but it does have its own beauty Im biased though I think..

Hi Trudy,

In my experience pieces with commemorative/corporate additions are generally less popular, but it all depends on what they're commemorating or who they were made for. If you could research what or who the squirrel represents it would certainly help if you were considering selling it.

Looking at the fractures where the handle meets the body I would guess they were from manufacture, it's quite common to find them there. As long as they dont go through into the main body or right across the handle (no creaking sounds if you manipulate it) I dont think they are an issue, but others may disagree?

Thank you for all of that. Now that I actually know the name Im looking at, I can see the signature. Honestly they can look like something totally different until its pointed out what it actually says.

I had a look at the mambo design too. I didnt realise I could look on there for it. I looked at so much Kosta glass yesterday online. Its quite lovely. Very pure and clean..thats what the mug says to me anyway.

The fracture doesnt go to the glass, it just seems to be on the top of the handle part. No creaking. The reason I thought it was stress was because of the weight of the glass.

I'll now be researching squirrel or fox logos to see if I can find out more about it.

Its great asking on this board. You learn so much and everything seems to lead to something else. Im sure I wouldnt be so diligent if I didnt have the help. I probably wouldnt know where to start.
