amethyst cameo perfume bottle
« on: September 10, 2007, 11:10:05 AM »
I bought a lot of various amethyst glass recently - all different ages and styles, but this is probably my favourite piece of the lot.  The gilded metal mounts are quite tarnished, but there doesn't seem to be any damage at all to the perfume bottle itself.  I can't find a signature anywhere, does anyone have a view on where and when it might have been made?

Many thanks Frank.

A wide range of dates - I assume there is nothing I can use to check which end of that range it might be?
Thank you very much!

Metal looks later rather than earlier. Is it gold plated, bronze, brass or something else.

Not heard of that metal before  :o

Best were silver... then bronze or brass plated with gold or silver, then brass, then base metals plated were the cheapest. Only affects the tops, mostly available on any base. There might be a small marking on the metal.

You can see the silvery base metal coming through the plating. Seems so odd to put such cheap fittings on such nice glass!!
Thank you very much!

It would have looked OK new. The reason was cost with brass being the most expensive other than silver.
