Glass Technologist? Teeming
« on: October 09, 2007, 09:31:21 PM »
Teem, Teeming...

context:
Quote
... but there was a set of tongs on a monorail for lifting the full pots from the furnaces and teeming. They can teem 4 to 6 pots per hour.

What does it mean, please?

Frank, I don't know if this is the correct meaning in respect of glassmaking, but Chambers Dictionary gives the following definition as one meaning of teem:
Quote
"teem2 verb (teemed, teeming) - to pour out.
ETYMOLOGY: 15c: from Norse toema to empty."

But a further use casts doubt on the assumption based on its other usage...

Quote
...These furnaces had low crowns and they took a larger pot than those used for teeming.

Tool for glass molding operations and method of manufacture thereof

Mentions teeming twice two-thirds down, just before table 3 and twice between tables 4 & 5. Appears to indicate an alternative term to 'pouring' or 'moulding'?

I found this on a ggogle search
"Dictionary of Mining, Mineral, and Related Terms - Google Books Result
by American Geological Institute - 1997 - 646 pages
(DOT, 1949) (c) The person who teems or casts the pot of glass. See also: casting. (ASTM, 1994) teeming (a) Shaping glass by pouring it into or on molds,"

There was also reference to steel teeming ladles

We seem to be getting to reasonably sounding guesses... yet the term is not in use in Hodkin & Cousen, 1925, even though they also discuss some of the same processes at length some 20 years earlier.

Could it have gone out of fashion in the UK, but was a term still being used in Germany?
