I don't know who started this marketing approach with cut glass, but once it started and became popular with just a few trade buyers, then they all had to join in or possibly competitive edge.   So, as you said, it was the money aspect.

Of course there were no rules, apart from maximising sales turnover and profits.   If a major trade buyer ordered two dozen of your fish pattern cocktail sets, and wanted them unmarked, then that's what was delivered.   Even quality suffered at times — see the dreadful base star on what was otherwise a top class Stuart piece here.

I don't see a base star Bernard, the view showing the etched mark is looking into the glass and I think the visible cuts are on the sides of the glass.

Hi all,
been away for a while, sorry, promise to be back on a regular basis from now on,
Ive just seen this interesting thread, and i would love to have any advice on a topic ive
just put in the market place, re some Stuart glasses, im hoping Bernard may be able to help
