Topic: Dugan cherries - a few questions

I have a Dugan Cherries dish with a collar-base (?) and the Jeweled Heart reverse, but I am a little confused (not surprising, I know).

Is this classed a sauce? 6" in diameter.  What is a sauce actually? Are 8 ruffles unusual?

This dish also has two splits on the edge of the glass, which obviously occured during production. Is this common? I have never seen it before.

Hi Della, looking in David Doty's glossary, he says:

Sauce   A rather general term that refers to small bowls, usually 5 to 6 inches in diameter.
So it would certainly seem so.

I must admit I usually just call them 6 in diameter small bowls...!

No, it is definitely not a sauce bowl.

"The Art of Carnival Glass" page 100 - quote: "Sauce - a small bowl that is not ruffled (or the sauce would simply flow out)."

A sauce does not have ruffles.

Your bowl, Della, is a small ruffled bowl. You could certainly call it a small berry bowl, as it was most likely made as part of a full set comprising master berry bowl and 6 individual small "berries". The number of ruffles aka crimps can vary. The two splits sound like they may have occurred during cooling.

Thanks to you too, Glen  especially for the explanation. I had seen small ruffled bowls also referred to as sauces, hence my confusion.

Della, I finally got hold of a copy of A Century of Carnival Glass through Amazon Marketplace - reasonable price.  You would love it.

There are some bargains to be had there - my Hajdamach only cost me £8 including postage....

I did buy "A Century of Carnival Glass" last year, Lynne and you are right, I love it! The photo's are fabulous as is the information. I now need "The Art of Carnival Glass." I bought the first one as Glen said that it had more European Carnival in, which is mostly the stuff that seems to find me. 
I have quite a few books now, mostly about Scandinavian glass.

Ah but it was second hand Glen, so at least you would have got your royalties when it sold the first time...

Sorry....it is the only way I can afford so many expensive reference books.
