If the silver is hallmarked that will give you a date and some indication of where it might have been made/imported.

Hmmmm it looks like it could be Davidson pattern 695.... see 2nd item on this page: http://www.cloudglass.com/R19211930.htm

Rose, is the rim hallmarked silver or is it plated?

Thanks Christine, I was hoping you would confirm it. :)  I have two large cake plates in this, and a small bowl too somewhere in the cupboard.

Confirm 695.  One of Davidson's best sellers, in various sizes.  Many sold to the "platers" (one of whom, Abrahams, of course eventually took over the firm) for fitting rims etc.  I seem to recall some had the tops specially roughened to take the adhesive.

 :o :o really...

I see no anything on the ring -- nothing. Are you saying the pattern was registered for that date, as this is the age of this  ....

I was going to put it in my own garage sale stuff for next year, and ask maybe $5 for it,as it appears to be in excellant shape....and I thought it was maybe like the posting/date of this other piece of glass in this post:
 * Candy Dish with lid... November 13, 2007, 07:54:53 AM of mine

So what is the value/age/date of it?

confused as usual.... :-\

Hi Rose I suspect your rim is chrome-plated. The date is when the design was registered but many of Davidson's designs were made for 40 years or so. Yours is more likely 50s/60s when metal fittings were quite the thing. What is the base rim of the bowl like - is it rounded off and shiny as if it just came out of a mould or ground flat? I also suspect $5 is not far off the mark.

Like Christine, most of these I have seen have had chrome plated rims, with a few EPNS (silver plated).   Very occasionally you find them with handles.    Once, just the once, I found one with a hallmarked silver rim, most unusual for mounted Davidson.
