Cut/engraved decanter; original wooden stopper?
« on: December 11, 2007, 10:24:04 PM »
I'm not very familiar with decanters but I think you'd describe this as a shaft and globe decanter with an engraved leaf pattern above vertical mitre flutes(?), a hexagonal cut neck and a star cut base.(you might guess I'm taking these terms from a book!).
I'm guessing it's Victorian but I really wonder about the stopper - I hadn't read about them being made of wood before, so could it be original?  The bit that fits inside the decanter is clearly made of cork and seems quite roughly cut - it smells slightly of port too!   Any ideas about who might have made it and where and when, would also be most welcome.

PS. Being able to attach photos directly now is such an improvement for me.  Many thanks to whoever is responsible.

Hi Iain,
i think its a later addition from another bottle to keep the wee dram fresh.
It would have had a glass stopper originally.
Probably English, circa 1850-80.

Thanks for that.  It's good to know that I was right to be suspicious.  Regards, Iain
