CURVED VASE - COPY OF A WELL KNOWN DESIGN?
« on: January 04, 2008, 07:21:57 PM »
Good Evening - this is one of my new year's resolutions, to start posting here.  :hiclp:

I recall reading somewhere (probably here) that the design of this vase is well known and often copied.

I've seen smaller clear ones with an IKEA label.

Mine is just over 14" tall, bright red and has a white lining.

Can anyone please tell me about the original maker / design and also what you think of mine?

Thanks

xx

Hi Sue, how did we manage to miss this? ::)  I think the original design was done by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala - see this page for examples: http://www.freeformsusa.com/glass/Iittala.htm (items 37-40) but the shape has been made by various glassmakers, including those sold at IKEA (some of which were recalled on safety grounds I seem to remember.)

I saw something recently, 6 months or so ago, maybe it was somewhere like Homebase, or possibly
made for one of the UK Charity shops, I remember thinking it was a nice piece of glass,
for a reasonable price, and well made.

Thanks all for that, the originals are lovely....

I think mine was from a charity shop, quite a while ago though.
