Uranium Glass? Mid Century Mod Flygsfors Type Bowl
« on: January 25, 2008, 11:31:35 PM »
I don't have a black light (can anyone recommend one?), but this will fluoresce with the camera flash against a black background, so I think it contains uranium. It even seems to fluoresce slightly on a black background without the flash. (Only the last pic here is with the flash.)) Does anyone think this might be Flygsfors? I know those are usually signed. I can't find any signature on the base of this, but then the base is extremely worn. Thanks for any thoughts you can offer!

I haven't seen a Flygsfors like this. Many Scandinavian companies, and Lorraine Glass in Canada, did their own version of Coquille, but, again I haven't seen anything like this.

You can pick up a uv tube/flashlight on eBay for well under $10 (plus shipping). I think I paid $4.99 for mine and it works well enough.

Thanks David. I also have never seen a Flygsfors Coquille with internal inclusions like this, but a lot of them have this shape and the white line going around near the rim. Honestly, I've never seen anything quite like this one. Do you think we're safe calling it Scandinavian?

I'm not at home with my collection right now and I'd like to try my Coquille's with a black light. My recollection is that that they don't react to uv light. So I would hold off on the Scandinavian right now, especially with what seems to be a green cast to the clear glass. I think I know the obvious Scandinavian, but there are far more people on the Board with much more knowledge. Didn't Erickson also make a version, for example? If I had to pick a Scandinavian suspect, I'd say Bergdala, as they did colour and usually used labels rather than engraving.

This style doesn't look like Erickson to me, though he did do some shaped like this. His glass tends to be pretty simple. I would say this bowl has much more than a green cast - It's green.  :) I've never even heard of Bergdala, so I'll start Googling around in that direction.

Thanks again, David!

I've been told Flygsfors is definitely out as a potential maker for this. I'm not surprised. In my thread on another board, mid century Murano was suggested by Laura (planetglass). Also possibly Bohemian or Canadian. So...Yeah, sounds like it could be anything.  ::)

I was reminded about this post when I was looking at this piece on eBay,  3701119144, which has a squiggle like yours, although only in one colour. I went back and checked my Flygsfors and their orange colour does glow green under a black light.  Also not all Flygsfors have the white line.  I'm filing this in the better late than never section.

Orange glass is not very likely to contain uranium, more likely it's manganese or something else in the glass. Shannon was talking about the green bit I think.

Thanks for that info. I wasn't sure it was uranium, which is why I said it glows green (quite mutedly). I tried the camera flash on my orange Flygsfors and the effect was nothing like the one Shannon produced.

Wow, thanks for keeping an eye out.   You know what's surprising? I finally did get a black light, and this piece doesn't glow at all! I did recently see a piece on ebay that looked like exactly the same shape and it was signed Hadeland. I'm not able to find it now. Maybe it's expired already.

For some reason I wasn't able to look up the one you mentioned by the item number.
