Green Fan Vases - French?
« on: February 02, 2008, 04:46:48 AM »
Hello everyone,
I bought this 2 pieces this month.
They look look very old and mold made (have a seem), but have pontil marks on the bottom, and an iridescent to them too.
Also, the glass feels like wax to the touch. Could they be French?
Any ideas of the maker?
Thanks
Javier

Are they uranium glass, as your picture on black appears to indicate?

Actually, that photo is just with a flash on the black background.
But yes, i just tried it with the black light and they do glow!

Javier

.... ok, just tried to take a photo under black light, but it keeps looking purple like the light in the photo.
Can this be because of the iridescence/overlay of the vases? because I can see it with my eyes they turn glow-green, but I cant capture it on the photo. Maybe the light is not strong enough... not sure...

.... looking at it closely, the vases are reflecting the purple light and thats what im getting in the photo.
But they do have a glow.

I've found it very difficult to take photos under black light, Javier.  Even the most brilliant green glow turns to purple in the pictures  :(  I don't think it's to do with the iridescent finish.  All my uranium glass does the same, regardless of the finish!  I think it's just having the right equipment / lighting / technique  :spls:  ::)

Not Biot which is usually marked, usually simpler in form and unlikely to be uranium.
Also Biot started in 1958. This looks older.
That's the only French company I can think of which does this random bubble type glass.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for the reply.
I don't know if they are French.
That was just a guess on my part.
I do agree that they feel and look much older.

Seems I got an answer to my question.
I was looking on Ebay and found this auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320217271591

Same vase as mine but purple, made by Consolidated Co. Catalonian around 1927.
Was this an American company?

I think Catalonia is the range - Catalonia is part of Spain. See http://home.earthlink.net/~jdwilson1/conhist.htm
