A useful(or useless?)  bit of info....
In 2006, £8 2s 6d from 1970 was worth:

£86.83  using the retail price index
£88.33  using the GDP deflator
£157.96  using average earnings
£188.35  using per capita GDP
£204.95  using the GDP

Andy ;D

I calculate £77.01 from 1972-2006 using the Composite Price Index, if that's any help.

as regards Pete's comments about two examples popping up over a year after a new book on the topic had been published.....I do agree to some extent, but personally I'd only be worried about using the term 'very rare' if twenty had popped up, not two....
Best,
Mark

Yours is bigger than mine.

You lucky, lucky beast!

Truly wonderful piece of glass, isn't it? So much going on, so many different looks and colours, depending on the light....

When I got mine years ago, I hadn't a clue about it, didn't know it was any sort of rarity, just reckoned it probably was Mdina, and LOVED it right from the start, it has always been a favourite.

Sadly, I'm completely unable to work the camera, (Michael can work it a bit, but cannot photograph glass - you can vaguely work out it's a vase, or a bowl) but the thing has one of these stupid moving screens, rather than a viewfinder, I have real trouble focussing my eyes, far less working out whether or not the camera is in focus, and everything comes out in lovely shades of sepia. Mine's not as tall as yours, 9" wide, but a longer neck, inproportion. It has (sadly) no irridesence on the outside.

You might be able to spot it in this pic. of the sitting room.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b227/chopin-liszt/sittingroomfromdoor.jpg

One unusual feature is that one shoulder seems to be higher on one side than the other, but because of the way the very thick glass has a magnifing/paperweight effect, it actually LOOKS pefectly balanced, but only when displayed from one side - turn it round, and the imbalance is a bit more obvious.

Does yours do this?

Hi Sue,
yes, i can see it, lots of lovely glass :hiclp:
My piece is fairly balanced, maybe just a fraction higher on one side.

Off to the auctions now, hoping for more bargains ;D

 :chky:

I got mine and the tape measure out, just to check sizes (call me sizist if you like >:D).

Mine's 10.5" wide, 5.75" tall, one "wing" is 3" deep at mid-point, the other 3 1/8" deep.
One particulary lovely feature that does not show in photos, is that when viewed with light on it as well as coming through it, the amethyst centre seems to be "cased" in blue, under the crizzle network.

I know it isn't, but it's a trick of the light working with the crizzle bits.

I take it, Andy, that the centre of yours is actually amethyst, not the brownish shade that appears in the pics?

Thanks Pip, ;D
Sue, mine is 9 3/4 wide, 6 1/4" tall, the wings a bit higher at 4 1/4" and 4 1/2" the other side.
The inside is amethyst, and i think that makes a  bit of the 'crizzle' look a bit blue in places.
Andy ;)

ps, Sue, does Mark know of yours, if not, thats another one shown up, i am sure there are more
out there somewhere gathering dust that will appear from time to time ;D

pps mine weighs 2420g
