Vine Engraved Tazza with Uranium Jade Foot
« on: March 15, 2008, 02:02:29 PM »
Hi,

I wondered if anyone had any ideas about this tazza (I think that's the right description).

http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-9345
http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-9346 Profile
http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-9347 Base

The clear top has an engraved border of fruiting vines. The base and stem are uranium jade glass. The base has a polished pontil in the centre and the edge of the foot is folded.

Top diameter is 6 inches and height is 4 inches.

Many thanks in advance.
robbo

If you're around and it's convenient, Robbo, could you please post a closer photo of the engraving?

Hi Kristi,

I'll try and get a better photo of the decoration - the grapes are polished, shallow cuts with the leaves and tendrils engraved.

Thanks,

robbo

Hi,

I've managed to get a better photo of the engraving. The grapes are shallow, oval, polished cuts.

Thanks,

robbo

Thanks for posting the photo, Robbo.  Unfortunately, I don't recognize the style - it's quite distinctive, with the right angle in the grapevine.  Many many companies engraved grapevines; sometimes it's possible to at least get an idea of at least the country of origin, but this one doesn't look familiar.

Thanks again for the photo!  Engraving is my thang, and after seeing the glass, I got curious.

It’s probably a bit tenuous, as everyone and their dog does grape and vine decoration, but the engraving of the leaves and fine stems looks very similar to those in this Webb Corbett example: https://www.ebay.com/itm/385294338700

And Thomas Webb bobbin stems: https://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,60645.msg342026.html#msg342026
and in ‘Gay Glass’ type uranium: https://www.20thcenturyglass.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=4320

I wonder if Webb is a possibility?

A link to similar uranium Alabaster Glass out of interest, Webb not mentioned:

That slightly yellow jade looks very Stevens and Williams to me. http://lustrousstone.co.uk/cpg/displayimage.php?pid=1726 The Gay Glass Spring is somehow more green to my eye

Thanks for the link. The reason I was interested in this is that I have a glass with the same stem and foot as the op’s bowl, but with a clear conical cocktail type bowl. I thought it might be Stevens and Williams but the topic about alabaster glass in my post above seemed to be doubting that S&W used uranium, when discussing what I thought was the same type of glass as in the op’s bowl.

Christine thanks for the link. So it could be possible my grapefruit is also Stevens and Williams if they did indeed do a uranium opaline green?
https://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,70113.msg390515.html#msg390515

I was wondering then if their uranium green was used for an S&W opaline range but not used for their 'alabaster' range (the pieces with colour and white in the same item), however in the book The Crystal Years it says this:

 R. S. Williams in the book The Crystal Years says this on alabaster glass 'The uranium oxide in the batch gave a bright and slightly yellow tinge to this exciting colour'

None of my white and green 'alabaster'range pieces are uranium glass and I'm not sure I've ever seen any online that are uranium glass.  But there are pieces from the 'alabaster' range that don't have a visible combination of a white section and a coloured section in one item.  I own a few that are single colour.

Ekimp I have a little pink and white alabaster glass with a bobbin stem that I think is Stevens and Williams.

Is it known if Thomas Webb ever made a uranium green opaline glass?

Here is my cocktail glass for reference. About 7 inches tall, folded foot, no pontil mark.
