Quiz - What did Stevens and Williams call an 'Up'
« on: March 25, 2008, 04:25:46 PM »
Any guesses as to what Stevens and Williams termed an 'Up', collective term was 'Ups'.

Clue: It was always part of a two piece set.

Was it part of a carafe set? Looks like a water bottle with an inverted tumbler on the top. The tumbler was the "up". Similar items (in appearance) are called tumble-ups.

In the 1894 catalogue it was called "Caraffe and Tumbler" and shown in this post http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,16899.0.html

Sowerby called them a Carafe and Up in their 1885 catalogue. So I guess they stole a march on S&W by nine years  ;)

I think someone at S& W just had a sttuttter.

At the shows I've been to in Virginia, these are always referred to as "tumble ups".

They also had a sense of humour this Caraffe & Up has a comical fish engraved onto the side, imagine reaching for your water in the night and seeing a fish floating in it.

Perhaps, one day, the glass-house descriptions will get used a bit more too.

Incidentally this was priced at 10/6d per dozen, without the fish it has a much earlier pattern number and only cost 7/6 so each fish engraving adds 3d to the price.
