That base finish is consistent with the fake PY weights. I had not realised that details had been published outside the Cambridge Paperweight Circles original investigation reported in a
joint publication with the Monart & Vasart Collectors Club in 1989.
"A large proportion of the PY weights that have appeared in auction during 1988 and early 1989 were unfortunately the fakes. So good were many of the earliest production that no one suspected anything amiss until the high volume continued. Also the appearance of weights with identical designs but containing either a J or a PY cane confirmed the suspicions that the weights were not genuine."
Paul Ysart personally confirmed that those with the PY cane were not made by him. This is the first time I have seen one with a J cane.
