My mate Ray (ex W/Fs) has a large vase signed something like- szklarska  porb  fulia- anyone know it.  sigs a bit worn.Thanks.JP

I don't know whether any glass was (or is) produced, or signed, in Szklarska Poręba, but I do know that the Hotel Krysztal has a good bowling alley in the basement - at least it did in Sep 2004!

I was there on a paperweight club trip to "Bohemia / Silesia", which took in both sides of the Czech / Polish border. Szklarska Poręba had tourist gift shops (mainly for the winter skiers and summer walkers) but its closest link to glassware was the old glassmaking sites a short coach ride away. The ruins of Josephinenhütte and the "settlement" of Orle (formerly Carlsthal) were two of the closest sites.

The old Carsthal site made me realise what a hardy lot those 18th century Silesian glassworkers were. The place was in the middle of nowhere, up the top of the mountains, by the raging river Iser which defines the country border. The only way to get supplies in and to get products out was a difficult several kilometre track through the forest, traversed on foot - and in the depths of winter, temperatures were sometimes colder than in Siberia!!

But I digress somewhat ...

  Yes Kev i havnt seen it but Ray said it is a large heavy vase with pulled up sides and splashes of colour, i believe he said 12 inches,a bit like the ones he made at W/Fs and made a couple of demo ones at Adam Aaronsons place.
Kev you did say a bowling alley not a blowing alley?
