Whitefriars dates / catalogues
« on: April 29, 2008, 04:15:44 PM »
The seller of this Whitefriars item specifies a pattern number and a date (1949). (I know it is a paperweight, but I have asked here as my query is more general).  Is there a source which would show images or describe items from the 1949 period of production (eg a catalogue or online reference)?  And if so, what about the years either side?

I showed a picture of an identical (as far as I am aware) paperweight to an ex WF glassblower, and he confirmed to me that it was WF but the date he gave for it was the 1970's.  He also said that they "were not made for very long".

However, I have to say that it certainly does look like paperweight number 9312 shown here in the 1949 catalogue http://www.whitefriars.com/catalogues/contents.php?id=10399

Perhaps he was referring to the colour?

WF catalogues can be found online at http://www.whitefriars.com/catalogues/index.php  and at http://www.whitefriarsorg.org/GMIE-sm/whitefriars_catalogues.htm

Many thanks for all the helpful links.  It does seem these were made in 1949!

Alan — See http://www.whitefriars.com/catalogues/index.php for an excellent and comprehensive range of searchable WF catalogues.

Doesn't it make a huge difference acknowledging sources?   That eBay seller has now gone on to my personal grey list (check very carefully before buying anything from them), whereas a few words of acknowledgement would have put them onto my EPNS list (looks good but do the basic checks).

Hi Bernard, do you know for certain that Whitefriarsorg or whitefriars.com are that seller's sources?  They sell - and have previously sold - quite a lot of modern glass, perhaps they have their own research library, or perhaps even the catalogues?

Thank you very much!

That seller asked on here and was answered definitively. Also on WF.com without a very conclusive answer. That's what Bernard means. Presumably the date came from the catalogue

I am sure it is Whitefriars  same range as the ones made for the Festival of Britain so that should give
an approximate date, the festival ones were red white and blue.JP
