I have uncovered mine at last and had a good look sorry it is not intaglio i have a similar bowl that is
on looking close up the outer buffalo shape is quite deeply engraved and the highlights are etched and gilded.

Does it look/feel like something's applied?  Otherwise I'd think it's sandblasted.  I've forgotten what it's called when itty bitty pieces of glass are adhered to a piece, but I can probably find out.
