Ruby Tumbler Vase
« on: July 10, 2008, 09:47:16 PM »

   Hi,

Can anyone help with I.D on this Vase? it stands 6inches(15cms) high, 4.5inches(11.5cms) across at the top and almost 3inches(7cms) across the bottom with aground and polished pontil mark, light horizontal ribbing that can be felt both inside and out. Any ideas would be most welcomed!

          Warmest Wishes,

           John

Picture of base might help but tumblers are made by a lot of makers outside the usual areas of collecting and of course very widespread.

If you can give diameter of pontil and is it polished or semi polished and how many ribs, internal or external ribs all helps.

   Hi All!
as requested here are pics of the base. In answer the pontil mark is polished, measures just over 1"(2.8cm) and is slightly off centre,as for the ribbing it is VERY subtle but I'll stick my neck out and say six! Overall the vase 'feels' quality!

          TIA

I would suggest that horizontal ribbing could be related to how it was made rather than deliberate. Is there any wear on the base or elsewhere?

To me it suggests hand shaped.

That was my thought Frank as the 'ribbing' is so subtle, yes there is wear to the base, but then it has been packed away for about 6 years or so!

        Many Thanks,

         John

Probably needs handling to go much further. But some observations, I could be wrong.

The rim appearing to be a little uneven, the ribbing and the off centre scar could suggest hurried or less than a maestro at work. At one extreme it could be old but possibly not very and almost certainly a factory product and not a bottle works.
