i have looked at the wonderful site on whitefriars but as i have never had a piece i was wondering whether this could be my first piece...cound someone help pls.

Easy answers first - your vase is definitely not Whitefriars. I've no idea who did make it.

The style is definitely Finnish, so with a bit of luck it was made by Nuutajärvi or Iittala and had a desirable designer. However (there always is one, isn't there) similar things have been made in Germany, in Poland in Austria and in Czechoslovakia, and a correct attribution might be difficult. On the upside, it looks well finished and nicely designed and the colour is a nice clear crystal. Good find.
