Ariston Lamp w/Opalescent Shade - Walsh Walsh?
« on: August 13, 2008, 03:04:28 PM »
Hi -
I had posted this item on eBay's PGP Board and it was suggested I try here, because this is a Brit lamp and the shade might be by John Walsh Walsh.  So,........here I am!  :)

This lamp has a pewter look base and a gorgeous opalescent shade and it is signed Ariston. I haven’t had much luck looking for the company which is apparently a British appliance company? Any Brits out there have any info to offer?

It has been rewired and if it was a UK lamp to begin with, that would explain why. The ‘new’ wiring seems to have some age.

The shade has a criss-cross pattern in the bulbous area and very close parallel vertical ‘lines’ at the top and bottom. It’s got blue/pink hues in the opalescence. Would love to know who made the shade and the approximate age of the lamp.

Anyone have any thoughts?  I appreciate you taking the time to check in.   :)

Anita

Hi Anita

I've taken the liberty of changing your title a little.  I've added 'Walsh Walsh', so it attracts people that know about that subject particularly.  Hope that's ok with you!  PS: Welcome to the GMB  :)

Different Ariston and therefore may not be British. See here

It may be that Ariston is the name of the range because if you do a search on Ariston, history and lamps you discover that Ariston appears to have been a glass? lampmaker in Roman times

Hi Christine -
Thank you for your comments.  You're probably correct that the appliance company is different from the lamp company.  When I was searching online, I found a lighting retailer in the UK that featured Ariston lights.  I assumed that it was the same UK manufacturer I had been seeing in my search results.  :-\  I should know better than to assume!  LOL

At this point, I guess I'd be thrilled to figure out who made the gorgeous shade.  Is Walsh Walsh a strong possibility?  Or someone else?

Thanks again for looking!
 :)

Hi Anita,
slowly, slowly catchee monkey.....
This is a board with an international membership, and specialists in many fields.
Not all available at 24hrs notice, and many who merely visit occasionally. Answers can take days, months and sometimes years.
Be patient, and I am sure, some of the very talented and well-informed UK glass specialists present on these boards, will help.
Regards,
Marcus
(A Czech specialist, so about as much use to your enquiry, as a chocolate fireguard.) ;D ;D

Can we have detailed views of the base. Might not be that old, any markings anywhere.

Hi Marcus -
Thank you so much for your post.  I do appreciate that those who help do so on their own time, and that they have lives which don't revolve around glass!  I guess I am just more accustomed to a fast moving board (PGP on eBay).  I apologize for coming across as impatient.   :-[

Now, did someone say chocolate?  The best way to bide my time is to eat chocolate!  LOL  ;D

Thank you for enlightening me.  :)

Hi Frank -

Thank you for looking.  :)

Are you looking for close up pix of the base of the shade?  I'll get some and post them as soon as I can.  I haven't seen any marks on the shade, just on the lamp base.

Anita
