Another amber jug with pontil
« on: August 30, 2008, 12:28:20 AM »
This is another of my collection of large jugs which I can't pin down to a maker.  It is well-made, with a largish polished pontil mark, amber glass, optic-ribbed (8 ribs). Height is 5½" / 140mm.  I can't find any maker's marks on it anywhere. Does anyone recognise it please?

Yes, I've got one, almost identical but in a dark green, approaching a Bristol green, and possibly slightly iridised, which came with a set of four matching optic 16-ribbed tumblers and a matching footed optic 16-ribbed glass with no stem.

While anyone could have made these, I think they're British, and everything about them matches what I know about Webb.   So a "possibly Webb" may not be unreasonable.

Bernard, thank you, I was thinking along the lines of possibly Webb, so it's good to know my feeling wasn't way off base. :) I have a similar jug also with optic ribbed tumblers in amber, and a neighbour has green tumblers the same, which I've always suspected are Webb also.  (see pics below)

Roy, thank you also. Your jug is very similar in style to the tumblers and sundae dishes we have discussed a while ago here: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,9362.0.html
