Another one from me which looks very new as there is no wear to base but was bought at a local antique fair! I wonder if someone had just been to town that day !!!!!

It is yellow cased white and some browny orangery swirls dropped in and two small clear glass handles. Have I been had (not for the first time)

Hi Doris

That really all depends on what you bought it as. It is fairly much accepted that in general "antique" fairs there will be a certain amount of modern items.... and I'm not including direct repro here.... so unless it was sold to you as something specific then I can only assume you bought something that you liked and to that end ultimately it is simply what it is.

I do feel that your vase is quite modern, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't have value.  It's a great colour and I really like the abstract splash of colour across its base.  Reminds me of pieces from the 70's!  Retro baby!

When you find a piece of glass, if you're looking for vintage pieces, try looking for wear to the base (assuming the dealer hasn't been sandpapering it..lol).  If you find a piece in a charity shop with wear, then you can * safely assume it's old.      Try looking at the symmetry of  the piece.  If it's meant to be symmetrical, is it?  

The most important thing I personally ever learned from this message board was to support new glass designers...without them, real art glass could be lost forever.

I suspect this may come from either Poland or China have seen very similat items with the clear applied handles with Polish stickers, and also very similar coloured pieces in job lots of Chinese glass, but very decorative whatever the origins and as stated if it wasn't mis-sold then enjoy on it's intrinsic merits.

I once saw a water set on eBay with the same effect: white cased over with a colour which graduates from top to bottom, and that characteristic swirly effect around the base. It was labeled "made in China".

Unfortunately this was before I was into keeping copies of photos for proof, so it has to fall into the category of hearsay -which means it is evidence but not conclusive!  I can't add anything more, like a date, or whether similar items were made elsewhere.

In any case, I don't think it's any older than 1970s.

Thanks all for your comments. When I first bought it surrounded by antiques I first thought Italian then when I got it home amongst all my other pieces I thought no way!.--------Then I went into a shop called Pier and there were shelves and shelves of beautiful glass vases of a similar ilk in every colour under the sun Made in China so my little vase has got a home now (for a while)
