Caithness or? ... ID = Lotton
« on: October 11, 2008, 06:21:55 PM »
This was offered to me together with other weights that were said to be a Caithness collection. I've seen this one before, but can't decide if it was a Caithness... I find it similar to some of the Orient and Flume... Is anyone familiar with this paperweight? Cheers!

I think it's safe to say that it's in the style of Orient and Flume, but not as crisp as one would expect.  I often see other artist's weights that look very similar, but not actually from that studio.

With my Moderator hat on, I have moved Derek's response about this weight from where it was posted originally (combined with two other weights) and tidied up the other message to take out the duplication with this one.

Derek said:

The third weight I suspect is American - and possibly Lotton

[As a general rule, posting separate messages about each of multiple items (even if they may seem to be from one maker), is best as it avoids losing track of what comment applies to what item.]

It was confirmed that it is Orient and Flume (label still attached). Thanks!

This is so puzzling...check out Ebay item #380072346438.  It's by Lotton, and looks exactly like yours but the flowers are a different color!

Hi, it should be signed if it's O&F, any chance of a larger photo?

Sorry everyone, it was a misunderstanding... label reads Lotton, not O & F. Here is a photo of the base with the label (photos from that seller are all a bit blurry...)

Good that we now have a confirmed Id.

But, Tzenka, if the images are from a seller, do you have their permission to include them in this board? If yes, then please always mention that permission is given. If no, then please always provide a link (or some other reference) to the actual sale item such that the photos can be seen in context and will not infringe copyright issues.

The copyright issue when images are used outside of "pesonal reference purposes" is complicated. Although adding another person's image to a message board could be thought to be quite innocent and only for "educational purposes", if the image owner does not know that it was used in that way, they could raise problems for the board. That is part of the consideration behind the general board policy of "erring on the side of caution" regarding anything that could be problematic for the board and its owner.

Okay, I will add their permission. This is not really a "seller", in the meaning of the word that they are selling items on a site etc. It's a person I know who is willing to sell me her grandfather's collection, and who took a few pics (I think with her cell phone) for me. So, there is absolutely no problem with these pictures!!!
