Hi everyone, recently I've bought this paperweight. Could it be a Perthshire?

Hi Marc

Correct ! It is a Perthshire. This style was called a marble owing to its small size - usually around 35mm diameter. They were made right throught the 1990's . The ones made in the later 1990's had simpler canes and yours appears to be of this vintage. All the backgrounds are a dark colour - usually blue or black to make the canes stand out.

The size on them seems variable I have two of these: A black colourground at 50mm and a blue one at 40mm. Cane complexity seems to be about the same which would place both in the late 90s. The black colour ground was my first Perthshire.

I've seen a red colourground one. Wish I had one.

Agreed - not only does the size vary, but also the dome profile - I have one around 40mm diameter that is quite squat but the small one is more like the marble it is supposed to be! I suppose they got the apprentices to onck these out hence the variation.

Perthshire also did a series of cone shaped weights in the same ground colours - Black, Blue and red

Mine has a green background, 2".  Cannot find my mm ruler - how does that size translate?

It wasn't my first Perthshire, but one of my first Ebay purchases!

2" works out to be about 50mm.

Thank everyone for the info, mine has 2". Why doesn't has a "p" cane being late 90'?

Hi Marc

The "P" cane was generally only used on the PP, annual collection, special collection and limited edition weights. If you are interested in learning more about Perthshire weights there is an excellent book :

"The complete guide to Perthshire Paperweights" by Mahoney and McClanahan. It is out of print but its easy to obtain a copy from secondhand bookshops try a site like abebooks. This book only covers up to 1997. There is rumoured to be an updated edition in the pipeline that will incluse the last 4 years until Pershire closed.

Here's the link to my green one.  I really like it - but I wondered too about a missing P cane.  I asked the seller at the time, but she just got nasty and said I was welcome to return it.  Too far and too expensive, plus it was too pretty.  It's good to know that is as authentic as she claimed.
