Walther Schmetterling Vase and frog

Well, my beautiful Walther Schmetterling vase arrived - complete with frog!   :D

However ...  :?

The dealer did say he wasn't sure if it was the right frog, as it is clear glass, but Pamela said the frog was meant to be clear so it didn't show through.

However, I have a problem.  IMHO the frog is not a very good fit.  So I need to ask if anyone knows whether Walther made frogs specifically for each different vase or bowl, or whether they made a selection of frogs which sort-of fitted a variety of similar shaped bowls or vases.  

Here's a couple of pics of the frog :  http://tinypic.com/dg5j4z.jpg http://tinypic.com/dg5jba.jpg  Sadly, as you can see, there is a chip off the end of one or two 'fins'  :(  But the fins don't actually touch the inside of the vase in several places, which is why I wonder if it's the right one!  :?

I have sort of decided not to display the vase with the frog in anyway, as it sits quite high in the vase and IMO spoils the view of the butterfly lady from inside when viewed from above.   Since I have nowhere high to display her (as cats might knock her down!   :shock: ) I want to be able to see into the vase.  See what I mean in this picture : http://tinypic.com/dg5gzn.jpg

She is *sooooo* gorgeous!  :shock:  I just love her!   :D  To me, she's so 'Metropolis' I just want to go and watch the film again!   :lol:

I've noticed that certain dealers say "I'm not sure that this is ..." when they mean "I know it's not .....". It's a way of playing on your wishful thinking, without being strictly dishonest. Like the lady who sold me what turned out to be a brand new vase, telling me she thought it might be recent. I was a dill and didn't read between her words.

(And, of course, none of the dealers on this board are like that at all!)

It is a lovely pattern and I hope someone can answer whether it's right!

sorry your frog croaked. I think you are supposed to use the bowl without the frog, only at times when the frog has a function (wet fruit, floral arrangements) you bring it out.

Actually, I did tell the dealer I wanted the vase anyway, even if he couldn't find the frog, so I really don't mind if it isn't the right one or if it's a bit 'the worse for wear'.

I'm not about the put flowers in the vase, (or wet fruit! :shock:  :?  ) so I'll just put the frog away safely somewhere (and try not to forget where!  :lol:  :roll: )

I'm still curious about whether Walther made individual or 'universal' frogs, though.

I have had a look through the Walther catalogues and hopefully posted an image of your vase. The source document however is of low grade quality but shows well enough that the frog that you have should be the original one.
Just to compare , some of the Davidsons domes, that are correct for a particular piece, simply wander about all over the place. so dont let that put you off regarding authenticity
In the catalogue it showed at least widely 6 differing shapes of vases all employing the same frog... and they also made a variety of other frogs.... so this should answer your other question.

:D Thank you, Gareth!  That certainly seems to answer my questions.  

I think I will still display my Schmetterling without her frog, though.  I like to see the image of the lady from inside, because she looks even more delicate and etherial from there.  The reverse image actually seems to move as you look at her from different angles!   :shock:  You know how that reversed face trick works, where your eyes deceive you into thinking the hollow mask is actually right way out, and it seems to be following you round the room? Stunning!     :shock: :D

Is any more information given about the vase in your catalogue?  I want to know everything about her now!   :roll:

Not really....just gives the size and, from memory, the colours. The image I posted is really all that there is and probably because it is just one item of many from what is a simplified product catalogue.
 I cant find the link at the moment but if you remember what that German site is with all the publications etc you might find some more info there.
