Aren't both CELERYs acid or sand etched, not engraved? Which would require a template and something probably knocked up in the engineering shop

Isn't it strange, if I'd ignored engravers someone out there would say that you CAN identify a piece of glass that has been engraved by a particular hand - although you'd have to know where there blanks came from.

I was NOT saying that either of the celery vases on the two threads in question were engraved. Quite obviously they are not. Hey ho........

  Bernard has worked to identify pieces by font style of lettering punches in pressed glass, so it's not a completely impossible suggestion, Nigel.

I'd hate to try and make a mark on a piece of art glass with a punch!

I wasn't aware that I was referring to pressed glass, where I am sure it would be possible to use embossed marks as a way to ID a manufacturer.

In order to get an idea across on a forum like this I often talk in terms of rule of thumb. I do this because I don't have the time to list all the alternatives.

Yes, there are loads of examples where you can contradict the statement that I made above.

I wasn't suggesting that this was a piece of pressed glass, or that the lettering was made by a punch, just that it's possible to use a font to identify a maker.

I think what Tony was suggesting was that that particular stencil template, through which the letters were etched, might have belonged to one particular company. This could account for the lettering being identical.

Later: Looking at the two side by side, I'm not convinced the lettering is identical. Still, an interesting thought.
