Two new finds - Celery Vase & Pitcher
« on: September 08, 2005, 03:41:38 PM »
Two very recently acquired pieces (the pink one today).

Firstly the pink vase.  It has 3 vertical 'splashes' of lighter pink/white and with CELERY etched on the front.  5.75" high with a polished pontil mark on base.  Quite a heavy piece.  Wondered if it was maybe Scottish or Whitefriars???  I seem to remember reading about "luxury" items having utilitarian labels placed on them to avoid tax - can anyone remember the link please?  This would also roughly date the piece I suppose.

The blue cased pitcher is approx. 12.5" high with a thin roughish circular pontil mark on the base.  I would guess this is Italian but not sure.  Unfortunately is has a crack where the handle is fixed at the top  but it is a lovely looking piece, and as long as it isn't picked up by the handle, I guess thats okay.  I only paid 50p for it, so I don't really mind

Any help in identifying these would be much appreciated as usual. Thank you. :P

Hello Anne, I think this is the link.
http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,2136.0.html

I don't think your pink thing is Scottish - it looks like the stuff that looks like Nazeing, but isn't, that everybody who doesn't know anything about glass describes as Scottish, in the hope of passing it off as something related to Ysart (if you see what I mean  !!!).
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Earth without art is just eh.

Should I be worried?  I actually understand what you mean!?!  :?  :P
Thanks  for the link Sue.  I knew I'd seen it somewhere but the neurons aren't firing today

Hi,

The pink celery is made by S&W.

Does that mean that this one in the link below is S&W since the text looks identical?

It is a rare thing that you can identify a maker of an item purely by the 'text' that is used on the item. It did not have anything to do with the ID of the S&W vase in this thread.

Even if an engravers hand is identifiable, it is not necessarily possible to identify the maker of the glass.

The amber one could be by a number of manufacturers.

:-\

If i don't mention the similarities i'm sure there would not be as many official ID's out there as there are now.  :-\
