ID for this Cranberry/Gilt/Enamel beaker please ~ Bohemian?
« on: January 15, 2009, 12:54:01 AM »
Hi all,

I recently got this rather nice beaker in a mixed lot at auction and would be very grateful if anyone could ID it for me. It's just under 4" (10cm) tall, has an unfinished pontil mark and is heavily gilded with hand painted enamel flowers on Cranberry glass. I'm guessing that it's Victorian and possibly Bohemian, but would like some confirmation or otherwise before I decide at to do with it!

Many thanks in anticipation, John.

I think I'd be looking in the direction of moser for this.

Thank you ~ I was hoping someone might think that. Have compared it to other Moser pieces and there are definite similarities in the decoration (flower shapes etc), but haven't found anything exactly the same yet.
Was Moser signed? (This beaker isn't.)
Thanks again, John.

not all moser was signed. I didn't see the exact decoration in the Moser book I have but it is very similar to other output from Moser.. Moser is just the easiest thing to attribute it too. There are/were a lot of little factories in Bohemia putting out this sort of thing and it could have been quite a few of them that made this, but most of them don't have records that are easily accessible by the public and they just are under/out of the radar. It is almost certainly bohemian at least and could be possibly Italian too.

Hi,
Thank you Jindrich!!
I picked up on your Moser link, and emailed them on Friday with a photo as you suggested with regard to an unresolved Glassmessages query of mine. They emailed me this morning to confirm that my ewer was Moser, made in the 1880's. Brilliant!! I can now add the confirmation to my original query.
I have included a photo of my piece.
Thanks again. :hiclp:
Bryn

Well done Bryn

Unfortunately, Moser have stated that the beaker is not by them

Ah well.....

Hi John,
That's a shame, I thought I'd seen tumblers like yours listed under Moser on the Great-Glass website shown in their Photo Gallery. I've had another look and one difference I can now see is that on the Moser examples shown the gilding does not cover all of the glass surface like on yours, there are gaps where the main colour shows through.
Pity. It's a nice piece.
Cheers,
Bryn
