The mark may be a tie number - 5, used to match the stopper to the decanter.  Matching parts would both be marked.
Just a suggestion ;)

This decanter is British and dates Regency c1840. The S is a 5 and should also be on the stopper.

The decanter can not be Regency period as they don't mark with number at that time. May be mid-Victorian .

Hi Ming, I believe antique glass decanters were not numbered before 1840 but were numbered during the Victorian period 1837 to 1901 - I also believe this decanter is 1840-50 the latest, so it takes us into the early Victorian period which is quite close to what your saying. Thanks for your input.

I've recently purchased a pillar cut decanter circa 1820 which is numbered, so I'm confident to say decanters were numbered this early. Any other input would be much appreciated.

Thanks
