Mouthblown Textured Bottle / Vase
« on: January 28, 2009, 07:08:40 AM »
Hi  I have a very unusual bottle / vase which looks more like ceramic than glass because of its very unusual texture - it looks as though it has been kiln-fired with a 'lava' glaze or with some sort of ash in the glaze.  It has a sticker underneath which says 'Mouthblown Glass'.  Looking inside, one can see that it is glass.  I have never seen anything like it.  It stands 21 cm (8.25") high and is obviously mould blown.  It's most attractive!  Does anyone know the what /where/ how etc of this piece?

Hi: #2 is scavo glass, which was developed in Murano to imitate the look of Roman glass that had lain buried for many years. Barbini and Cenedese did a lot of it, but this piece doesn't remind of anythign I've seen from them. I seem to remember someone, Ivo,  I think, saying that Egypt produced a great of scavo now. You might want to search threads under scavo.

Largest poducers of scavo glass now are in Mallorca and in Italy - somewhere south of Venice. But I cannot really say I've seen this patterned style before.  The sticker suggests Italy to me - but it is no more than a suggestion.
