Rather fab bowl, cobalt and black
« on: March 21, 2009, 11:19:57 AM »
Promised myself I wouldn't buy anything else this week but this one wouldn't let me out of the charity shop without it.  Black outer layer is actually deepest purple, there is a layer of white between the black and the blue.  22 cms width, 7 cms high, very heavy, almost 2kgs.  I do have some ideas myself but as I'm so often wrong I'll wait to see if anyone has anything to say about it. Quite old jusding by surface wear.  Cheers, Gill

The style of the bowl is Murano. The base isn't polished to a gloss, though, so I suspect it may be from elsewhere. The bases of Murano bowls I have seen are polished smooth. The dark purple is called black amethyst. It is a nice bowl, but I don't know the origin. A couple of the Murano-style bowls I have had that had frosty bases were Czech and Polish. Chinese pieces also have these types of bases, but your bowl doesn't look Chinese to me.

Thankyou Anita for your very useful reply, re. Murano bases, one of those things you don't realise you know until it's spelled out for you, now you've said it I realise that of course, every piece of murano I've ever had like this has had a polished base.Must admit I was thinking along Murano lines.  Also didn't know the name for the colour.  I think wherever it's from it's a fairly nifty piece of work.  Bet Ivo , or another clever person knows...... Thanks again, cheers, Gill
