I have a Caithness Paperweight which is dome shaped and contains a hedgehog which has two bright white eyes, purple flower, yellow flower and some green foliage. I have searched the various sections of the Scottish Glass website on Caithness Paperweights but cannot see mine. I would be grateful for any advice as to age, name of piece plus an idea on value.  I have found out that William Manson designed two hedgehog paperweights but they are both different to mine and we are wondering if this could be a trial piece.   Can anyone resolve this mystery please?   I tried to attach a photo but it was too big but could e-mail to anyone who may be able to help.  Very many thanks.

Thanks Wolf for adding the photo I sent you - very much appreciated.   Too technical for me to reduce the size!

I wouldn't be surprised if this is a Willie Manson Sr. experimental.
His son sells his new weights on eBay so you may be able to ask him through eBay.

WM Sr. loves adding a 'comic flair' to weights and this one fits in, so do the flowers.

Right up his alley but hard to be conclusive.

It this piece signed in any way?

I think it's a great paperweight either way - fun and lively  :)

Hi Alexander

Thanks for your reply.  I cannot see a signature but looking very closely on the base there are some faint crosses, so not sure if this signifies it was an experimental piece.   I will write to Ebay as you suggest and see if I can find out any further information.

Best wishes

Angela

Hi

I contacted William Manson Jnr and have received the following two replies back from William Manson Snr – one via a message I sent through E-bay and one direct to me about the paperweight that I have.   It proves that it is definitely a prototype paperweight:

Hi Angela,
thanks for the photo, this was a prototype weight prior to finalizing the hedgehog design for Caithness Glass.
Hope this helps
Kind Regards
William Snr.

Hi Angela
thanks for your email, the weight was made by me during my time at Caithness glass, several were made before the design was finalized, this is one of the prototypes.
I hope this is of help to you.
Kind Regards
William Snr.

I am interested in selling this paperweight and may try putting it on E-bay within the next few weeks.

Good news on the confirmatiomn of ID. If you do sell it, add a message about it to the GMB Market Place forum.

I have put a short (1 page) guide to CG Artists' Proofs, trials, 1/1s  and Samples on ebay Guides. (UK & USA)
- It's not as clear cut as one might expect it could be, but that's the way it is....

Either:

Search ebay guides :
-> my ebay
-> sitemap (top right corner)
-> Buyer Resources -Reviews & Guides (lower left corner)
-> search for 'artist proof caithness', or 'caithness paperweight'

OR

..here's a quick link, thanks to Wolf.....
