Walsh Walsh Vesta Venetian or Italian?
« on: May 13, 2009, 09:49:40 PM »
I've just won this lidded pot on ebay today, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120416871383
It looks to be a Walsh Walsh Vesta Venetian lidded pot, however, it has a label suggesting it's Italian. From what I can read on the pic it says 'Lavorazione a mano, fabbricato in Toscana - Italia'. Is this, as i suspect, just a case of label swapping? From the photo the rib count on the body appears to be 18 (i.e. I can count 9 on the visible half), which, as Bernard has pointed out previously is typical for Vesta Venetian and matches the blue example I had last year.

I look forward to hearing any comments/ suggestions. I'll add more pics & give an accurate rib count of base & lid when it arrives.

Thanks,
Steven

Nice piece of Empoli glass circa 1960/70s with a most convincing label; not sure how you could mistake it for anything else.

This was why I thought it might be Walsh Walsh Vesta Venetian:

http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,21889.0.html
http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,13404.0.html

Pics have vanished from the final post but it was a lidded pot of the same shape as the one in question.

Great Glass also show a lidded pot of this type attributed to Walsh Walsh here: http://www.great-glass.co.uk/library/lib2ac.htm

The reason I bought this item was because i'd never seen a labelled example before & if the label is appropriate to the piece then it might call into question some other Vesta Venetian attributions.

It might be the ebay photo but the semi-horizontal ribbing doesn't look as fine or as distinct as the other pieces shown on here. The Great Glass one also looks to have more distinct ribbing both ways

Best post some pix when it arrives.

For comparison, here are some images of a blue pot I sold some time ago. This was the same shape as the one in Barbara's post - I know as it was that thread which initially led me to attribute the pot to Walsh Walsh. Having seen this labelled example & heard Ivo's opinion, I now think that attribution was likely to have been incorrect, though I need to get a better look at the one I've just bought before I can be sure.....

It's also got me questioning other supposedly Vesta Venetian pieces, for example the orange pieces discussed in the posts above. In fact, I've just acquired another item in this orange, a jug with the same opalescence and 18 rib pattern - I'll post more pics when I get the chance.

Finally got round to photographing the labelled example ;) Rib count is 18.
