Blue and black hearts Art glass vase Maybe Scottish??
« on: May 25, 2009, 08:47:39 PM »
Hello again,
can you help me identify this vase that has a marbled glass finish with black hearts around the vase. No markings to base and no sticker! Maybe Scottish? Highly polished surface.
Thanks
Vickie Purves

Hi Jackie,
I would say Caithness, we have a similar vase in pink, albeit probably a bit taller, which has hearts in the same place as yours and looking at the base it's almost identical. No Caithness mark but it has a sticker.
Hope this helps. :)
Bryn

Thanks Bryn,
that's great, I have e-mailed caithness to see what they say, but I havn't had a reply yet. :'(
I got a reply form the Auction house in Australia about the Matt Johansen Owl, they said it sold in 2005 for 60 Australian Dollars which is £29.
Thanks again,
I am posting another vase now!!
Best Wishes
Vickie ;D

Hi Vickie,
Here is a base photo of my Caithness vase not exactly the same but certainly similar..
You have done well in getting a reply from that Auction House, it shows it's always worth persevering. I remember contacting Moser with a query and they were most helpful, I think that as long as you are polite they really seem to put themselves out for you.
Good luck
Bryn

Hi again Vickie,
Take a look at this vase auctioned recently in New Zealand - wen't for $101.00 WHATTTTT!!!
What's that in real money I wonder! I'd would have been happy with a tenner for mine. Is it your vase in pink?

It's roughly £31.

Thankyou for your replys Bryn and Michelle,
I had a look at the pink vase, it was really beautiful, I wonder if the blue colour way is more unusual? I'll never know, as you were right michelle. The Dartington glass works said that they finished in Perth in 2007 and hold no records, so they suggested I contact a dealer. But I'm convinced anyway that it is Caithness.
Thankyou for solving that puzzle. £30 doesn't seem much for such a lovely vase!
Vickie :)

Hi Vickie,
Personally I think your blue vase looks much nicer than the pink one, but perhaps that's just a man thing ;D.

£30 seems a little high for an auction price to me. The old Caithness ranges were often made in different sizes and colours, so if Bryn has a labelled one, then yours is Caithness too. They were all hand made so there are bound to be slight variations. There was a period when they went in for opaque casing and marvering and strapping - I have a bowl of unknown range and date. See here. If you scroll down there is a picture of a marked vase from your range that Andy spotted at an auction.
