satin bowl
« on: June 03, 2009, 11:03:18 AM »
Not quite sure if this query should go into Scandinavian or English - but this bowl (3" high, 4" diameter) was found in Edinburgh. The stand ring is so scratched that there is no chance to retrieve traces of a signature. The item is satinated with the exception of an engraved band. The material is serious lead crystal - it rings like a bell when tapped.

I thought it looked like Steuben maybe?     I have no books covering that though.

Ivo,

I could not locate the shape in my Steuben book, although because it is clear, if Steuben, it would most likely be a later piece, post 1933 after colors were discontinued and phased out.

IMHO it does not strike me as Steuben, as their claim to fame is the use of 10M, an exceptionally clear glass, and the use of so much frost on the surface does not strike me as their style... They engraved quite a bit, but I could find no images in my book showing that style of frost being used. I can not think of seeing a piece of this style either.  The post color era used some Carder era shapes, and also introduced some new shapes. This form is, IMO a little "stiff" in feel for them.

Is there a pontil on the underside?, or flat ground base?

Thanks for making sense & valid points. The underside is on second sight not what I expected it to be. I first thought it was a highly polished out pontil mark with a flat rim around it, but the centre seems to be pressed in as to form a smooth convex & concave. The effect is a magnifying lens on the inside of the bowl! The rim is where you'd expect a sig - but alas, just tons of wear to blot it out.
