really ugly big red bowl any ideas on ID
« on: July 01, 2009, 01:53:36 PM »
Hi there
jon bought this at the weekend and i hate it but i promised him i would put it on here "just in case its worth a fortune". Personally i think its rubbish but he only paid 50p for it. Looks like one from a charity shop or very very cheap factory shop to me..but i could be wrong it could be a long lost piece of monart which is worth millions ;D :24:
Ok  Thick red solid glass with an applied clear glass foot, lots of bubbles although as in the design/pattern. The foot is actually well polished with a disc ground and polished pontil mark (pontil 5.5cms in diameter). It has and odd rolled over on itself rim.
The vase is quite wonky and looks like its had one pint of beer to many!! (its not all my photography skills :o)
Looking at the base it actually has surface wear, which would suprisingly mean its more than 5 minutes old
It stands at 15.5cms one side and 17cms the other side... ;D, about 17.5cms in diameter and weighs almost 1.8kg..
Now in this case i would quite happily be wrong
 ;D ;D >:D michelle  >:D ;D ;D ;

Don't throw it out yet - it could be an unsigned Höglund. The rim is typical for his work... see what other people think first.

i must say i listed a big tanakrd on here a while back ( http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,26814.0.html ) which was signed this was thought to be Holglund and the bubbles on the big red piece really did remind me of the tankard. The big red one isnt signed or anything, but i know he didnt sign everything as ive had a few hoglund pieces that were not signed that are 100% hoglund.  Oh no  say that means i will have to apoligise to jon for saying some not so nice things about it lol  :-[

The finish is pretty similar, and the brown piece is solid, no clear glass foot. I have 5 signed and 5 unsigned - so I guess you have 50% chance of a signature on a Höglund piece. Yours looks quite convincing.

For the sake of completeness, here is another one in a strong blue - without sig.

I'm pretty convinced you are right there is just that nagging doubt that the quality of the finish isnt right, it looks like th quality of glass/colouring and so on are spot on, but yours appear pretty straight and the lines on the fold look straight and well exicuted, whereas mine is very wobbly and wonky... maybe and early one where he was practising or a second???
