Glass Polar Bear ID?
« on: October 09, 2005, 08:43:37 AM »
I have recently acquired a pressed glass polar bear and wonder whether anyone could assist with an ID and manufacture date. The figure is extremely detailed.   It has a satin finish.   The base is blue tinted glass (not applied colour). The eyes and nose have a black paint(?) applied finish.   It measures 7cm (just under 3 inches) long and stands 7.5cm (3 inches) tall.   There is great age wear to the base surface which leads me to believe this is a piece from the first half of last Century.   It was purchased in the UK.   Any ideas??

See link for photo.

Here's a shot in the dark.   :D

Something about the base on Alisons polar bear (thanks for the link Anne) reminded me of something.  This gets madder as I think about it, but heck!  I've trawled the listings to find it, so you're all getting it!

The polar bear base is similar to Chuggys Poli Seguso hippo:

Alright, alright!  Alison's one has a little paint and isn't Corroso, but the base...shall I shut up now?

Edit:  It made sense at the time.  :D

Hi -
I think Alison is a fellow resident of the land of Oz.

As for the polar bear, if I say something really stupid like "Gosh, isn't it Lalique", it should prompt someone to jump in and correct it!  :)  :D  errrmm, does it look vaguely French???

Cathy.

Well all I can tell you is it's not Pukeberg as I have one of their Polar Bears and he's nothing like this.

Just for reference here is the Pukeberg polar bear... http://yobunny.org.uk/gallery1/displayimage.php?pos=-625

Probably not Walther, it's the wrong colour.  :)

I don't think it's Lalique though the quality looks good. How about Sabino, Etling, D'Avesn, Genet & Michon?

I wish we could get at least the country of origin on this bear.  :x  :x

He's been sneaking up on me as well, but alas - no answer. I have a goldfish with a similar surface treatment. It has "diamond" eyes and it was found in France - so I always believed it to be French. But that is insufficient for drawing conclusions, I know.

I am still trying to get an id on the bear.  Can anyone advise on how to get links to photos back on the site?  I have lost the know how.
