Max - that was fantastic - that advert on your link has jugs with exactly the same words on!  How exciting!  Thank you ever so much.  Who is Frank, and how do I go about asking him?  I would love to know if Pirelli used created controlled bubbles because that would clinch it.

John - I think you're spot-on there too.  The tray bears the legend "Lang may your lum reek!" also, which would be quite odd on any other piece of glass.

With further thanks.  :hiclp:

Reading Max's link it looks as though Pirelli wasn't manufacturing anything by the time this set was made. Although it seems probable that they marketed it or even commissioned it. So we may never know the manufacturer of the glass, although it could have been decorated by Nazeing. We do know who made the wooden bit of the tray though, even though we can't find any more about them yet.

I have read a little more on the glasses, and it seems that they wouldn't have been for shots but sherry!  (I had been wondering why anyone would pour a bottle of whisky into a jug!)

I am going back a decade with this set too.  I think it could easily be 1950's because of the fonts on the tray.  The wood of the tray has motise and tenon joints at the corners too!  You don't get THAT at Ikea (I've been told...)

I think I might ebay it because I don't really have the space for it.  I used to think I would buy fast cars if I had millions of £$ but I would just buy storage space for old glass!

Stu, Frank is on the board and will hopefully look in and add his 2-pennorth. He's done a lot of research into Scottish Glass and into Pirelli and is a mine of useful info. :)

Hi Carolyn

I think it will be going on for a week on Sunday night.  The rim of one of the shot glasses has a flea bite, but otherwise in good order.  I will put it onto the sales area of this site sometime over the weekend.

Regards,
Stuart.

Just popped in for a catch up.

My tu'penny 'orth....... Thomas Webb made jugs like this, cylindrical, clear with controlled bubbles. I can't say that I can remember seeing them with glasses. I would have expected those to be tall and cylindrical as well :-\

I have a version of the jug with a glass stirrer, so suggest cocktails, or Pimms, rather than whisky or sherry, both of which would normally be decanted, not 'jugged'. Also this is a more likely use at that time.

Definitely Pirelli decoration, the jug is close to their Saville Water set but the glasses not. Probably 1950s production. Glass was possibly made in France, tray in UK.

Thanks Frank.  I was told to look out for you!  Appreciate your input.

I will be sad to see it go, but it's better off with someone who can enjoy it.

Cheers!  (or Saude! or whatever else they're printed with!)

There is a list of the slogans with translations on this page. http://www.ysartglass.com/Pirelli/Pirelliware1.htm

A lot more of their models are shown in the Glass Catalogue.
