Can you identify this orange/blue piece plz?
« on: September 11, 2009, 08:34:57 PM »
I was SO happy to find this forum - I have been looking for any information on the attached 'vase' and hope that you might have some ideas.

The piece stands approx 12" tall and measures 6" in diameter at widest point.

The top is a removeable lid - and I can't see any distinguishing marks on the piece anywhere.

I bought the 'vase' approx 7 yrs ago at an estate auction in Iowa, US but unfortunately there was noone available to tell me anything about the piece.

Any ideas plz?

Thank you!

Lovely kinky colour combo most likely from Empoli (Italy) in the 1970s. I have an identical one in white instead of orange.

Empoli Cased Glass - more information
« Reply #5 on: September 23, 2009, 02:51:26 PM »
I would really like to find out more about Empoli Cased Glass.

Can anyone advise on good place to start research plz?

The reason I ask is that I think I purchased a vintage piece of Empoli a few years ago at an estate sale and I am trying to verify it's origins so that I can purchase more pieces.

I tried contacting a business that advertises online and has a lot of pieces for sale but have to admit they were rather rude and unwilling to give any assistance at all.

So any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

It might be best if you could post a picture of your piece. Are you able to do that?

I don't personally know a great deal about the Empoli companies, but here are a few links to get you started.

I'm guessing this is the website you've already contacted?

... etc. Hopefully someone can tell you more.

Hi Cathy,

You guessed correctly on the company I attempted to contact - here is a bit of his reply which I found rather rude in tone:

"You bought your jar without knowing what it is which tells me you are motivated to buy things based on how they look, not what they are. You have also already determined that your jar looks like what I sell. Presumably then if anything on my site interested you, you would have already either bought something from me, inquired about something I have for sale or at least joined my mailing list.
Instead, you asked me to identify an item you surely bought inexpensively at an estate sale. I don’t think I risk losing future sales here and believe me I am not in the habit of being argumentative with potential customers. Generally people on the glass message boards are not customers of mine, they are usually other dealers and ebay buyers.
I earn my living based on my knowledge – which is unique and difficult to acquire – it is an asset that I essentially sell.
Best etc."

Please bear in mind that at no time did I ask for a valuation, just asked if he could let me know if I was heading in the right direction thinking that this might be an example of Empoli cased glass.
I have enclosed a picture and I think it resembles other 'circus tent' pieces I have found on-line but so far nothing in the same colour palette.
Thanks
Joolz

His tone was rude.....  quite rude, and very arrogant....  He made immediate assumptions that you would never be a customer. (I guess he proved that one right by his response to you)

He reminds me of a dealer at an auction I went to a few years ago...

He paid a lot of money for a cup and saucer ($900), and I went over after it sold and asked him what it was. I told him I was just curious and had no interest in the item personally.  His response to me was that there was no way he would tell me as his knowledge was worth too much to him and he would never share it. He was a real jerk about it.

I went and bought a book on the subject and studied up on line also.... I figured out what it was and what it was worth.  Next time a similar one came up for sale at an auction he and I were at, I outbid him with the intention of selling it online. He stared at me with a scowl, obviously remembering our previous conversation. I walked over and told him that his rudeness on the previous occasion had motivated me to learn about something I really had no interest in and that he had successfully turned me into a competitor.  I told him that if he had simply answered the question I asked in the first place, my curiosity would have been satisfied and I would have walked away.....

Some people, like the guy that emailed you, simply don't get it.....  He obviously does not....  Knowledge is hard for him to acquire, because he is obviously attempting to do it all alone.... without sharing any....  and that is absolutely the most difficult way....

I have always found that the more knowledge I share, the more I learn..... It is a two way street, and that is what this forum is all about....
