Two green vases
« on: September 13, 2009, 09:00:44 AM »
I saw these two green vases recently.  It is probable that they were bought at auction in Hertford about 30 years ago.  They are very attractive and pretty heavy.  The ruler in the centre of first picture shows height - over 30 cms.  The bases have good ground pontils and there is wear on the edges of the rims of the feet.

Any ideas about maker or age?

Christine

I can see that this has been viewed quite a few times but has no one got any ideas about maker and age?

Cheers

Christine

I would say not Whitefriars, there is a similar vase, but 30cms is far too tall and the green colour is not a Whitefriars green according to the pic I see on my monitor.  Emmi

Patience Christine, not every checks in frequently, it may take several days before someone has an idea about them... or it could be weeks or even years before we find out.

After looking around for both shape and colour at Cambridge on Sunday, I am no wiser.  I saw nothing quite the same colour or shape so no further forward at all.

Cheers

Do I detect a trace of gilding on the rim of the vase?

They are a particular green colour that I associate with Empoli glass, but that's nothing definite.

Spent some time studying an Empoli site yesterday

http://www.vmglasshouse.com/newsletter06.htm

and the colour and the curves seem similar.

The site says that he does not do queries by e-mail unless a known dealer (or words to that effect) so back at a brick wall again!  However, my friend to whom the vases belong, is happy to know that they might be Italian.

Cheers

Christine

Pontil is wrong for Empoli, sorry. And the glass looks too thin.
